Discover co-living in Cape Town

Think city living has to be expensive?

With rent prices sky-high in urban centres like Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town, urban life might simply feel out of reach. But here's the good news: Thanks to Capehavana, it's affordable, seamless, and stress-free to find beautiful shared living spaces in the most exciting cities. It's called co-living, and here's how it works.

What is co-living?

What is co-living?

Co-living is a modern form of communal living where residents get a private bedroom in a furnished home with shared common areas. Co-living is in demand in major cities as a means of affordable living for students, workers, digital nomads, or individuals relocating. Unlike traditional apartments, co-living is attractive to tenants due to affordability, flexibility, included amenities, and a sense of community.

In the context of the urban housing crisis and developers in the real estate market, co-living is one of the best and most direct means to achieve optimal density, affordable housing, and an urban community in areas such as Johannesburg and Cape Town.

TRENDING?
Co-living is the latest trend to come out of the sharing economy. However, the concept isn't wholly new despite the exploding popularity. It appears that owning a home in the suburbs is no longer the hallmark of adulthood for most people.

As more people migrate to urban hubs and city centres, some millennials opt to live in housing cooperatives. In today's sharing economy, young people — millennials, especially — have embraced the concept of sharing rides, experiences, and homes. Co-living simply makes this more accessible and convenient in major cities. Not only in South Africa but all over the world.
Capehavana is an example of a co-living business that is thriving in Mother City.

It's the best of both worlds. After all, studies have shown that loneliness is just as lethal as smoking 15 cigarettes per day.

You might also be surprised how smooth roommate life can be when someone else does the hard work of finding, furnishing, and cleaning the space. Remember – when you live with Capehavana, we take care of all those no that little details.

It's no surprise that so many Capehavana members end up becoming fast, and sometimes, best friends.

You won't just be living together and sharing space – you'll be part of something larger.

Co-living is not sharing

Is co-living different to sharing a house?

In a traditional sharing situation, once you've signed the lease on a new home, your work isn't over: You'll have to set up utilities and schedule monthly bills for essentials like water, electricity, Internet access, gas, sometimes even levies and taxes.

In a traditional sharing situation, once you've signed the lease on a new home, your work isn't over: You'll have to set up utilities and schedule monthly bills for essentials like water, electricity, Internet access, gas, sometimes even levies and taxes.
You also need to decorate your new place to feel like home, hire a house cleaner, and negotiate chores with roommates to keep things looking tidy. Furthermore, if a roommate decides to move out, you'll need to look for a replacement.

In co-living, you don't need to do any of these activities. You pay your rent, which will include all the monthly bills, and someone does all these errands and keeps the house clean and tidy for you. Maybe you discovered the Internet is down or there is a broken appliance. Just inform the live-in house manager; he won't rest until all are back to normal. Don't fool yourself; household management takes time.
With us, you pay your rent, and you don't have to worry about home administration, so you can spend more time on the things you love.

Eliminate the financial liability of roommates

Co-living does away with some of the financial anxiety associated with living with others.

By offering individual room leases (rather than group leases with people you only just met), Capehavana eliminates the stress around roommates paying rent on time or moving out early.

You also won't have to pay for utility upfront and then harass your housemates to reimburse you since utilities and rent are included in one monthly payment. Finally, you won't ever be on the hook to find a subletter for your roommate.

If you're not ready to commit to a long-term lease (or buying furniture and for a home you may only live in for a year), co-living offers a flexible alternative. This is especially helpful if you're moving to a new city and want to explore different neighbourhoods before settling down for the long term.
When you leave, you don't have to worry about compromising your housemates' living situation (or furniture!) since each resident is on their own lease.
We offer private rooms in co-living spaces that actually feel like home, as well as the best roommates to share them with. You can join this family.

Hmm, maybe not
There are quite a few cases in which you would fit like a globe in a co-living space.
  • Are you moving to the city with little furniture and looking for a full-furniture house with a limited budget?
  • Are you planning to stay for the week in the city but travel home on weekends? Or are you coming to the town to do some job, a degree or post-grad for at least 3 months?
  • Do you want to settle in the city, but want to know the city better and take some time to find your dreamed house and then bring the family?
  • Are you a young person that wants to move from the family house while saving some money to buy a home in the near future?
Co-living should be perfect for you if you identify yourself with any of  the situations described above.
There are a few things you consider before moving into a co-living space.
  • If you have kids, pets, or planning to move with a family, co-living might not be your best option.
  • If privacy for you is above everything else, you should consider a different environment.
  • Do you receive visitors all the time, or do you need to do plenty of activities after hours? You probably find it challenging to accommodate the rules of the co-living space.
Co-living probable is not the most recommended environment to raise a family.
